An Actuator is a mechanical device that converts energy, here electricity, into motion. It can be a linear motion (one direction) or a rotary motion (circular motion). 

Where is it used?

Actuators typically are used in manufacturing or industrial applications and might be used in association with devices such as pumps, motors and valves. Electric Actuators are more often used for the automation of industrial valves and can be found in all kinds of technical process plants: they are used in waste water treatment plants, power plants, agriculture, pulp & paper and even refineries. They play a key part in automating process control. 

How does it work? 

Electric Actuators are designed according to the specific functions that they serve within the process in which they are installed: usually to open or close valves of different sizes. The valves to be automated vary both in design and dimension. The diameters of the valves range from a few inches to sereval feet. Some Actuators are designed to withstand a great amount of pressure on the valve and still be able to perform the required action. Key component of an Electric Actuator are: a motor, limit switches, gears, valve attachment, override and controls.

Why use actuators? 

Due to increasing decentralization within automation technology, the functions of Electric Actuators have increased in many different ways. This evolution was also impacted by the use of state-of-the-art microprocessors, which has in turn influenced the position control. Modulating Actuators are more and more commonly used. Last genereation Electric Actuators are now equipped with new process controllers with self-adaptation potential, making it easier to attain new automation standards and safer to use with fail-safe capabilities leaving the process in total control even during a sudden power loss.
